Lift Minnesota’s Nuclear Ban

Nuclear power is clean, safe, and carbon-free. Minnesota has committed to de-carbonizing its electric grid by 2040, but currently prohibits the building of new nuclear plants. Our coalition is working to remove this outdated law.

1994

Nuclear Moratorium enacted.

Legislature prohibits the authorization to construct new nuclear power plants.

2023

Carbon-Free Power Mandated.

Minnesota expands its clean energy standards to include nuclear power and commits to 100% carbon free electricity by 2040. This year nuclear power represents more than half of all the clean electricity generated in the state.

2024

Coalition to Repeal Ban Established.

Over 20 Minnesota groups representing environmentalists, workers, investors, and other stakeholders urge MN lawmakers to strike the law banning new nuclear plants.

“The science is clear: we cannot address climate change without nuclear power. Minnesota’s moratorium stands in the way of meaningful climate action and must be repealed if we’re serious about protecting future generations.”

“A moratorium on nuclear means preventing growth and development in Minnesota. Nuclear is necessary for technology expansion and to mitigate climate change!”Nuclear power is essential to the complete de-carbonization of energy. Minnesota should retract its outdated anti-nuclear law and instead incentivize new nuclear energy for its battle against climate change.”
